That ending! There was tension and excitement right up to the very end, which left off in a place of so much possibility. That makes me even more excited to read the next book, which I now have even higher expectations for. Where so often authors stumble a bit after a successful debut, This Cruel Design is instead an example of all around levelling up. Her worldbuilding with regards to the coding and genehacking so integral to the story remains one of my favourites using this kind of tech. What I loved about this book, among other things, is that Suvada has clearly stepped up her game in terms of both her storytelling and her craft improvement. Instead, the story focuses on the continuing conflict with the goals of Cartaxus, and trying to uncover Lachlan's whereabouts in order to make some headway on the mysteries behind his code.

The romance that barely started in the first book doesn't get much traction here given all the other dangers Catarina and Cole face, which is how it should be considering the imminent danger they continue to be in. We continue to delve deeper into Catarina's character and all the secrets she holds, most of them from herself. The sequel to This Mortal Coil picks up right where it's predecessor left off and let me tell you, it is every bit as excellent as the first book And while Lachlan is always two steps ahead, the biggest threat to Cat may be the secrets buried in her own mind. Their search takes them to Entropia, a city of genehackers hidden deep in the desert that could also hold the answers about Cat’s past that she’s been searching for.īut when confronted with lies and betrayals, Cat is forced to question everything she knows and everyone she trusts. When news arrives that the Hydra virus might not be as dead as they’d thought, the group is pushed into an uneasy alliance with Cartaxus to hunt down Lachlan and fix the vaccine. But she’s failing-Cat can’t even control her newly regrown panel, and try as she might to ignore them, she keeps seeing glitching visions from her past everywhere she turns. Camped in the woods with Cole and Leoben, she’s working day and night, desperate to find a way to stop Lachlan’s plan to reprogram humanity. The nightmare of the outbreak is finally over, but Cat’s fight has only just begun.Įxhausted, wounded, and reeling from revelations that have shaken her to her core, Cat is at a breaking point.
